Kitchen design coordinates the way you cook with cabinetry, appliances, work surfaces, lighting and storage. Resolve dimensions and appliance specifications before finalizing cabinets. Confirm which construction drawings, trade coordination and approvals are included in the designer’s scope.
Describe the tasks before drawing the island
List what regularly frustrates you, where appliances live and which items need to be within reach. Distinguish useful working space from an image you like. The plan should account for appliance doors, storage access, seating, waste sorting and movement through the room.
Coordinate the fixed decisions
Appliance model numbers, clearances, cabinet dimensions and plumbing or electrical locations influence one another. Ask who measures the existing kitchen, who verifies cabinet fabrication dimensions and who signs off final specifications. Do not assume a concept drawing is a construction or shop drawing.
- Confirm appliances and installation requirements.
- Review storage by item and task.
- Look at samples beside each other in the actual light.
- Identify the responsible professional for technical requirements.
Compare complete quotations
A cabinet quotation may exclude counters, hardware, installation or modifications to existing services. A renovation quotation may exclude design fees and appliances. Create a single list of exclusions so that a low initial number is not mistaken for a complete project cost. Include delivery, removal, taxes and a separately agreed allowance for unexpected conditions.
Plan the period without a kitchen
Discuss access, dust control, temporary food preparation and the order in which work is scheduled. Ask which deliveries must be on site before demolition and what happens when an item arrives damaged or late. A confirmed schedule comes from the actual trades and suppliers, not a generic room-size formula.
Questions, answered.
Should I choose cabinets or appliances first?
Develop both together and confirm appliance specifications before the cabinet order is finalized. Appliance sizes, ventilation and installation requirements can change cabinet dimensions and the surrounding layout.
Does kitchen design include a contractor?
Not automatically. Design, supply and construction may be separate agreements. Ask who obtains trade quotations, manages site work, checks deliveries and handles changes before assuming these are part of the design appointment.
Can I keep the existing kitchen layout?
Keeping fixed services and a workable layout can be a useful starting point. A designer can review storage, lighting, cabinet configuration and materials while the appropriate trades assess existing conditions.
